3 Big Hits And Flops Of FIFA World Cup 2014

As I am writing, Germany and Argentina has progressed into the final. Many shocking things happened in this world cup. Few unexpected results have fill enormous joy in the heart of fans. On the other side same unexpected results have shocked fans made them sad and angry. If we list out few of them then it could be; the recent one, Brazil’s 1-7 loss to Germany in first semi-final; Spain, world champion’s exit in the first round; first round exit of Portugal, Italy and England as well, great performance of Belgium and Nigeria was commendable and many more defining moments.

The fans had lot of expectations from the stars of their countries. Some of them have full-filled while some of them failed miserably. 3 big misses first.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portuguese superstar, the second most expensive player with an estimated $136 million market value. Ronaldo has scored only one goal and that too against Ghana and assisted one goal against USA. The final goal count reads 1 and that could perhaps the reason for first round exit of Portugal.

David Villa
David Villa, Spanish Superstar. Lot of expectation were on him as it is usual from experienced player like him who have scored 59 goals in 97 caps.  But this world cup is forgettable for him as the score reads only 1 from 3 matches. This could perhaps the reason for first round exit of last time world champion Spain.

Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney, English footballer, has won 95 international caps and scored 40 goals brings him to joint fourth higher goal scorer for in history. Rooney failed miserably in this world cup. Only 1 goal from 3 matches was his last score before England make its way out from first round in this world cup.

Now let’s discuss 3 hits of this world cup.

Lionel Messi
Most valuable player in this tournament with $163 million, Argentine superstar, Lionel Mess has lived up to his reputation and produced some fine performances. By bagging all three man of the matches in as many group stage matches, Messi has taken Argentina in second round almost on his own. With super assist against Switzerland, Messi has put up one more brilliant performance in round of 16 as well. Messi has scored 4 goals and two away from top scorer 6 though only one final remains. Let’s see Messi make Argentina world champion or not.

Neymar
The Brazilian superstar with estimated market value $82 million has shown some fine performances before he forced to leave the tournament due to back injury. Neymar has scored 4 goals with 1 super assist and 1 successful penalty kick. It is unfortunate for the Brazil and without Neymar they shocked in semi-final. This shows how important the Neymar was for Brazil.

Thomas Muller
Golden Boot winner in the last world cup, German Superstar, Muller was riding on high expectation and he has also full-filled that. Muller is just one goal away from Golden boot this time as well. He has scored 5 with 3 super assist, he is by far one of the best player in this tournament.

As we are discussing the performances, we can’t end this discussion without naming few fantastic performances put up by some other low profile players. Here it is,

James Rodriguez (Colombia): He has scored 6 goals in 5 matches, scored in all games Colombia played. He is in the race of Golden boot. For me, he is one of the best player of the tournament for sure.

Arjen Robben (Netherlands): Robben has scored 3 Goals, but that score doesn’t say all the things about his performance. He is the key player to Netherlands campaign as the team reached to semi-finals.

Ahmad Musa (Nigeria): This name might surprise you. No one expecting much from this African Country but they reached to the knock out stage and Musa was the key player in the campaign. I am mentioning this because it was perhaps the happy moment for the Nigerian fans and big step forward for the game.

That is it! Let’s wait for the world champion. The super final on this Sunday!
