Why Gold for Jewellery?

For us Gold has remained symbol of power, beauty and cultural elite for years now. Even Gold now decides the wealth of a country because it is accepted as economic standard. A total of 174,100 tonnes of gold have been mined in history of human according to GMFC as of 2012. The Jewellery is there since years and in particular Gold jewellery is highest among them. There is mention of Gold jewellery in every religious books which believed to written years before the Gregorian calendar started. There was a craze among kings to get more gold so it is not today only, Gold implies to wealth years ago as well. Today also no different, people are crazy for jewelleries.

The turnover of jewellery industry in first quarter of 2014 reached $23.7 billion. After all these thinking, the question arose in my mind, there are 118 entries in Periodic table and many of them are metals, why gold has maintain such popularity for years now? I have tried to find the answer myself and after reading many articles, I have concluded the reasons which seems to me valid. Let’s discuss one by one!

The most common reason among my all the reading is, it is chemically unaffected by air, moisture and most corrosive reagents. The jewellery we wear, the gold bars every country store for years remains in touch with air and moisture. It’s anti-corrosive characteristic keep it safe from corrosion and it will remain the same in every condition.

Second among the common reason is, it neither tarnishes. The shiny yellow Gold remains the shiny for years in all the conditions, even in sun light also. So gold made jewellery never looks old.

The third one is, Gold is most malleable metal, and single gram can be converted into 1 square meter sheet. Its ductility is also an important reason. So using Gold, one can make fantastic curved jewellery easily and in minimum volume of Gold compare to other metals. You can make fine carved jewellery only using Gold.

The fourth one interesting, most other pure metals are grey or silvery white while Gold is yellow. And so create Gold alloys having various colours is easy. So it is pretty easy to make colourful jewellery from Gold by mixing it with other metals. Let’s see some most famous Gold alloys.
Gold + Copper= Rose Gold (Which is most common)
Gold + Iron = Blue Gold
Gold + Aluminium = Purple Gold
Gold + Silver = Green Gold (it looks greenish-yellow)
Gold + Palladium/Silver/other white metals = White Gold

The fifth one seems logical to me. Gold is dispersed widely throughout the geological world. But its availability is limited and mining process is very difficult. Rare availability to all increases the competition and demand. The one metal available in limited region helps to start import-export business. It can’t be used for standardization.
The sixth one is, Gold can be re-melted and separated from those alloys to make it pure again and the process is very easy. Design new latest and trendy jewellery easily is possible with the Gold only.

The last one to believe is completely depends on you. It is said and proved in few experiment that every metal leaves an impact on our body. There are few real world examples. You might have seen that acupuncture specialists keep Gold. It is said that Gold is warm and stimulating. There are many food products available in the market which contains a very small volume of Gold as ingredient and it is said that it helps to sharpen the brain of a child. Gold also owns anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties and that’s why so many cosmetic and anti-aging products in the market includes Gold in it formula. The use of Gold in medicine is known to all.

So these reasons I have concluded from no. of articles written on the subject with different title. Whether you believe it or not, many market experts says that Gold is the only commodity which is independent of the demand-supply chain and hence the price of Gold is also independent. Whether we believe it or not, Gold is most important metal in the world at the moment and it will remain so for years as well.
